TLCKibble, which is a partnership between Kibble, RCVS and UKCCPD, wanted to offer assistance to staff in the social care sector to both understand and access information in relation to SVQ’s relevant to the work they do. The Scottish Executive expect staff working in the social care sector to gain SVQ qualifications, as part of a drive to improve standards of professional practice.

The Learning Centre at Kibble was fortunate to secure ESF funding to try and improve opportunities for staff to improve their knowledge of how SVQ’s work, and also to access online a basic understanding of the care knowledge underpinning the care role that they undertake.

We believe there are large numbers of staff willing to undertake training in SVQ’s who simply need assistance to get started in this process, and have tried to help them by providing information on the core units underpinning SVQ 2 and SVQ 3 in social care comprising 10 units in total.

The 10 core units when undertaken give evidence towards the 10 skills for care identified by the Care Commission. In putting the material together we are aware that we are not so much giving new information, since the SVQ awards themselves are detailed on the SQA website, and are available in many colleges across Scotland. What we hope to do is help care staff, or people hoping to enter the care profession, begin to gain a better understanding of the type of knowledge required and the process they have to go through in order to do their SVQ. Instead of looking at the difficulties in undertaking training, it is important to look at the possibilities.
